Installation instructions for Novell® NetWare® (NLM)

System Requirements

  • NetWare 4.11-4.2, 5.x
  • NOTE: If you are running NetWare® 4.11-4.2, you will need to install Support Pack 8A.
The Support Pack 8A can be found at http://support.novell.com/produpdate/patchlist.html.
Download and install this Support Pack on your NetWare® server.

Installing FGCUSERS.NLM on a NetWare server:

  1. Insert installation disk 1 into the floppy drive on your NetWare® server.
  2. Load nwconfig.nlm (install.nlm for NetWare® 4.x).
    1. Choose “Product Options (other optional installation items)” from the Configuration Options menu.
    2. Choose “Install a Product Not Listed” from the “Other Installation Actions” menu.
    3. Press F3 to change the source path to the correct path for the fgcusers.ips file. This file should be on the root of installation disk 1 (Typically, A:\).
    4. Nwconfig.nlm (install.nlm for NetWare® 4.x) will start running the fgcusers.ips script. Simply follow directions on the screen.
  3. Upon completion of the installation, you can load fgcuser.nlm at your server console (LOAD SYS:System\fgc\fgcusers.nlm).
  4. NOTE: You will immediately receive an error message indicating the fgcusers.nlm could not retrieve a user list from NDS. This is because the user account and NDS context information has not yet been configured. This configuration will be completed from a client machine.

The configuration for this service is done with the client program (Remote Central Control, a snap-in to the Fortres security interface). The service uses an NDS user account to log in to your NDS tree to discover user and group relationships. You must set this information from the client program as well as the NDS context the service will use, or the service will give default security to all of your users when they log in. It is recommended that you create a new user object that has only the right to browse the NDS tree as well as read and compare the group membership property of users. All of these rights should be inheritable.

Installing the Client Components (Remote Central Control)

Select the machine you are going to install the service configuration program (Fortres Remote Central Control). You should install the Remote Central Control on one machine only. We recommend an administrative computer. If you have not already installed the Fortres security interface on this machine, the setup program for the Remote Central Control will do it for you.

Complete the following steps to install the Remote Central Control:

  1. install the latest NetWare® client on the Windows 95/98, NT, or 2000 workstation on the machine that will run the Remote Central Control. You can download the latest copy at http://www.novell.com/download.
  2. Insert the Fortres Central Control installation disk 1 into the floppy drive.
    1. From the Start button select Run.
    2. Type <drive>:\setup.exe, where <drive> is the floppy drive containing the installation disk.
    3. Press Enter to begin the installation process.
  3. During the installation, you will be asked for the name of the NetWare® server where you installed the Central Control service.
  4. Launch the Fortres security interface and select Fortres Remote Central Control from the tree view.
  5. Open the Central Control Settings dialog box by clicking on its name in the tree view. This will display the settings for the Central Control service (fgcuser.nlm) from the server you specified in step 3.

NOTE: If you mis-typed the server name, right click on Central Control Settings in the tree view and select Edit Server Name. The Remote Central Control is configured to work with only one Central Control server.

  6. Press the Change Context... button. This will open a window allowing you to browse your NDS tree for the context you wish to use to create the Fortres user list.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Answer No when asked if you want to restart the service.
  9. Press the Change Account... button. You must provide the account information for the fgcuser.nlm. The NLM will use the user name and password you provide to log in to your NDS tree to build its user list. Note: This account must have at least browse rights to the context you have selected and the ability to read and compare the group membership property of user objects. You need to use the fully-qualified user name (i.e. <username>.<orgunit>.<org>). If you are not familiar with this naming convention, review your Novell® documentation.
  10. Press the Rebuild User List Now button, or stop and restart the fgcusers.nlm module from your server console. You must have admin privileges on your NetWare® server to start an NLM.

NOTE: For the NLM service, the name of the server is the only valid parameter that can be entered.
