Fortres 101

Running Fortres 101 and Clean Slate together is pretty awesome. The products and support staff are excellent. Anytime we’ve had a question or problem, the support staff has always been able to answer the question, or fix the problem. It’s rare that you get support like that anymore. We have approximately 1200 computers running Windows 98, 2000 and XP. We have been running Fortres 101 and Central Control for about 4 years. It's been great in the classroom keeping students from accidentally or purposely deleting software or changing system settings. We started having trouble with computers getting inundated with spyware and corrupting the web browser, so we started loading Clean Slate this summer. What a great combo. I am a very happy customer.

Our university library has utilized Fortres as its primary security tool for 4 years and the results have been excellent in terms of "hackability" for 60 plus machines. The time spent repairing compromised workstations has been dramatically reduced. I can recommend Fortres without qualification for public workstations.

Fortres does what I've been trying to do with Windows System Policies for years now. But it does it MUCH better, less hassle, cleaner results.

As the School Technology Coordinator for Woodford County High School in Versailles, IY, Linda Cook found an easy way to stop students from breaking into the school's computer system. About five years ago, she purchased software from Fortres Grand Corp., based in Plymouth, IN, and to this day, hasn't experienced any problems from hackers. Several student hackers have tried to get around (Fortres 101) but haven't been able to break into the system. I've even asked some of them to try to do it right in front of me. For the past five years, no student has been able to do so. The software has been a lifesaver for my computer labs and our school system as a whole.

Your product is the best I have ever found, I have used several different security programs and Fortres is by far the best. I work at in an inter-city environment with students who are more than abusive towards machines. Fortres has saved me an incredible amount of work. I LOVE IT!!!! Thank you again.

About four years ago, we were literally pulling our hair out, trying to keep up with the changes that our Industrial Electricity/Electronics students were inflicting on our lab computers. The students felt a need to demonstrate their knowledge and expertise in altering the Windows desktop, moving or deleting icons, deleting or renaming files, etc. After seeing an ad for Fortres 101 in Tech Directions magazine, I tried the demo. We were so impressed that we ordered enough licenses to enable us to install Fortres on all of our lab computers. Fortres has been a Godsend! We were able to restrict the students' access to certain applications as well as what the students could and could not do. The setup of our computers remained constant. This made it easier to teach. The applications always ran. We did not lose productive time by constantly having to reconfigure the computers. We were in heaven! This year, we are offering an Introduction to Computers course. We will be teaching the students about Windows and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and Power Point). We recognized that we were going to have a problem. We needed to allow the students the ability to alter Windows so that they could learn how to use Windows (things like renaming files, copying, deleting, appearance, views, etc.). Our challenge was how to allow this, and yet keep the setup and operation of the computers consistent so that we could teach the course. We did not know how we could continue to run Fortres and yet give the students the freedom they needed to learn all the features of Windows and Office. We felt we would have to uninstall or deactivate Fortres, which would put us in the same situation that we were in four years ago. We were very concerned about how we were going to tolerate the "problems" that we knew would come.

I have always liked Fortres 101 and think it is the best security program available on the market today!

Speaking from experience, we've used the Fortres 101 product made by Fortres Grand Corp (www.fortresgrand.com), on both Dos/Win workstations and on our public Win9x stations. Product works great and is pretty easy to configure.

I'm a computer consultant here in town and support a wide range of companies. However, one stands out in my mind above any other because I've been struggling with keeping computers in their mall kiosk alive and running. As just about anyone else has stated on here, it seems like people have the desire to use/abuse/break ANYTHING that you put in front of them. I was altering the registry, breaking things completely, and half trashing computers to get them locked down to the point they'd last 6 months without a rebuild. I found Fortres 101 through a friend who stated they were rated high and recommended all over. I downloaded the demo, purchased the software the next day. I've placed the software on every computer as I had to rebuild it. and haven't touched any of them for the purpose since! Thank you!"

I'm using Fortres 101 with 98 workstations and an NT Network. I've been very happy with the program. There are some programs that have problems with the security but Fortres is happy to help you before you install.

We have been using Fortres in the Gladwin Community Schools now for more than 2 years. We are a school district of approximately 2,000 students. The amount of time we have spent solving "little" problems because of what goes wrong with computers or how students (and staff) mess up our computers have been greatly reduced. Fortres has been very easy to implement, and deactivating it to install software, make changes, etc. is a very simple process. We got some resistance from staff at first for locking down their computers, but they have agreed that it is definitely worth it to greatly reduce "down time" with their computers. We looked at samples and trials of other products designed to do the same thing, but found them cumbersome to use. Fortres has allowed me to save computer "fix it" time so I can do more of what I was hired to do: teach students and staff how to use computers.

I only wish I knew of Fortres when I was configuring systems for children & other careless users, it's practically bulletproof!

I have had Fortres for over 2 years. Everyday 117 inmates frequent our classes. At first they were really trying to regain control. I learned and I am glad that not one case of failure has shown up and further more Fortres is as stable as our network and confidence has been reestablished. The teachers are no longer afraid to invest their time in creating teaching tools because they are sure that the system will not fail them. Should I point out that Fortres 101 has paid for itself ten fold?

Anyone got any bright idea of what I can do being able to run a command.com from the emulated Windows 98 DOS prompt. Since it is running from the Windows shell, and fortres is enabled on the Windows machine I want to gain access to, the restrictions are all the same. For some stupid reason our admin enabled the command.com option, probably as a back door for himself somehow. I tried renaming/deleting/moving files from there but it wont let me since Fortres is running. I also tried to edit the config.sys and autoexec.bat, but no luck. Any ideas??

RESPONSE: They do this because there is not much harm you can do from a DOS prompt if the system is set up... I mean... I've thought about lots of stuff... and I've tried to get around Fortres in many ways... the only thing that worked was to get the password.

The best security software in this world is Fortres 101 (www.fortresgrand.com). Its security is nearly impossible to break even for advanced users.

I have tried many software products, but only Fortes 101 has proven to be very efficient.

We have computers placed in several correctional facility libraries. Security and safety are concerns to us, as well as to the CF staff at each institution. We install Fortres 101 on each machine we locate in a State or County prison facility. Fortres 101 software received a very favorable review from one prison staff member who invested time trying to crack or hack it before allowing the computer on which it was installed to be made available for inmate use. He was impressed that he had failed! So was I, since I know this guy knows his stuff.

We did purchase one copy to really work it over before we believed how wonderful we had heard it is. We put Fortres 101 on a really off task high school student and he wasn't able to do ANYTHING! Super job! Now I absolutely have to put it in the schools."

Fortres has really helped me reduce my work. As a system administrator, I have saved a lot of time doing other important things than maintaining the PCs, all thanks to Fortres 101.

We have installed Fortres 101 on our lab computers this year. The protection it provides has been great.

For users who have sensitive information stored on their PCs, the company should install Fortres 101 security software. Access to specific directories can be user dependent, eliminating the need to password protect individual files.

I worked with my High School's systems administrator my sophomore through senior year, as an assistant admin. We ran Fortres on every computer in the school. I can't count the number of other students who I heard griping about how there was no way to get around Fortres to get to programs, such as TelNet, which they wanted to use to hack other computers. We actually had a competition between the students who thought they were "hackers" to see if any of them could break through Fortres' security. Needless to say not a single student was able to do anything that we didn't want them to. I now run Fortres on my own computer to keep my roommates from causing any problems and have convinced my office, where I am once again a Systems Administrator, to run it in conjunction with Windows XP's own security programs.

Fortres 101 was a stark contrast (from other security products). I installed it in less than a minute and never even had to reboot, it was running instantly. This was a very impressive utility which had far more features than I would ever need. Fortres was the only program that left the operating system looking normal but locked up tighter than the chocolate biscuit tin in the staff room. The great thing with Fortres was that at the touch of a key combination, the prompt for the password came up and the security could be turned off. Very quick and easy indeed. Fortres lets you turn off the security, install a CD and turn it back on without ever rebooting or feeling like you've left windows.

Your product is a life saver when it comes to keeping people out of our public systems. In this particular case, "people" would be children who have already done in one system in the Activity Center and, yesterday, one in the library. Seems they like to go in and download games, put passwords on them, etc. One of the library computers has an NT operating system, but that is not a user friendly system in our environment. It is much easier to use Fortres 101. Thanks again for your great customer service.

I should tell you that Clean Slate did a great job for us. We got hit with a major virus on Tuesday and I watched computers go down like flies. The Windows program was dissolving in front of us. Our (anti-virus software) would not clean it up. I thought I would have to reimage every computer. But after turning off the computers over night, lo and behold, Clean Slate did its job. I could have cried. Not one computer was damaged by the virus.

I used the 30 day trial of Clean Slate after I heard about it at school. Is a great product and so simple to set up. I am new to Clean Slate but my school has used it from 2003 and version 3.0. I bought it before my trial expired because I like it so much.

No Joke. Since I installed Clean Slate, it has saved me over 3 hours a day!

I used (a competing product) for years. I switched when Clean Slate 4.0 was released. I recommend this version. It was very worth my time and energy to switch. One selling point for me was that antivirus and windows updates run normally. I was concerned it wasn’t going to be as easy as they claimed but it really is. This alone saves me a lot of hassle especially in my 24 hrs labs where I can’t have security downtime. Clean Slate offers all of the advantages of (the other product) plus it is a lot more advanced and technically savvy.

I believe I received a mailing from Fortres informing me of a program called Clean Slate. I read up on it and it sounded as if it could be the solution to our dilemma. I downloaded a demo from the web site. We then installed Clean Slate on one of our lab computers. We then tried to defeat the program. We deleted desktop icons, we renamed files, we deleted files, and we did everything we could think of that a student might do. I am happy to say that we were unsuccessful. The program works as advertised. Every time we rebooted the computer, the original setup returned as if nothing had ever been done to the computer. We are now able to let our students do whatever their heart desires to our computers. We simply re-boot, and we are right back where we started. It's Great! We love Clean Slate! Because of our experiences with Clean Slate, the Electronics Engineering Technology Department has purchased additional licenses so that they can equip their lab computers with Clean Slate as well.

I tried this product just after its release and found it to be a real time saver in down time for lab use in our school. It gives our students the freedom to explore and use the computers to their full extent without letting them garbage up the hard-drive or system. I have recommended this product to many of the school districts in the upper Midwest and have only gotten good reviews from it. It is easy to use and is very low maintenance as well as a great value. Fortres 101 has been a savior in our school and still continues to secure our PC's, but we have not been able to use it in our computer classes. Clean Slate seems to fit the bill.

Then I heard about Clean Slate and I spoke at length with Rob Kadlec, a Fortres Grand Sales Representative, about it. I toyed with the idea of a competitor's product, but Rob helped me to see the differences between the two products without badmouthing your competitor. He's a professional all the way.

Clean Slate has saved me man-years of time. Our desktops look exactly like they
did the day I installed Clean Slate (over 7 months ago). And I know that the computer is safe as only a microscopic portion of the hard-drive is exempt from change to allow certain applications to function properly.

This week I had a break through. Another vendor was distressed that some diagnostic log files were being wiped out after each restart. It took me a while, but then I realized I just needed to know what paths and files they needed to not disappear, go into Clean Slate and just add them to the list. And I did. And I did it without the intervention of a Fortres technician. It gave me a great sense of control.

So please consider this a testimonial for Clean Slate. Thank you to those who conceived it and developed it and who now continue to upgrade it and support it. I know I must not be the only librarian out here in the real world who can no longer imagine life without Clean Slate.

You don't know how nice it is to receive a tech support reply that indicates that my message was actually read & understood! Kudos to you all for listening. It usually takes 3 or 4 messages with other software providers to get someone to read the original message and give a reply to that!

When faced with 'ironing out' a problem concerning scanner access after upgrading our lab's Fortres software, I contacted Fortres Tech Support and was answered by a tech specialist the very next day. Throughout the next two weeks, via several email contacts, this specialist answered my questions promptly, continued to supply possible solutions, reviewed the diagnostics sent to him - in short, I feel he took a personal interest in our situation and resolved to see us through it to success. I have occasion to work with tech support for several software and hardware products and recognize this 'can do' attitude and constancy in answering questions makes Fortres tech support one of the best.

The technical support staff of Fortres 101 is a help of great value. I got very fast answers via email to all my questions and doubts in a kind and friendly way.
